Today Im gonna present you
with English interjections
Most of us are familiar with English vocabulary
But are we familiar with these
ah, alas, dear, er, hmm, oh, ouch...etc
These are called interjections
and they are used with specific meaning
They are used as follows
ah expressing pleasure, realization & resigntion
alas expressing grief or pity 'Alas, she's dead now'
dear expressing pity & surprise
eh asking for repitition
expressing enquiry & surprise
inviting agreement
er expressing hesitation "Lima is the capital of...er...Peru."
hello & hullo expressing greeting & surprise
hey calling attention
expressing surprise & joy
hmm expressing hesitation, doubt & disagreement
oh & o expressing surprise, pain & pleading "Oh, please say 'yes'!"
ouch expressing pain
uh expressing hesitation
uh & huh expressing agreement "Shall we go?" "Uh-huh."
um & umm expressing hesitations
